Land Steward Peer Network |
The Land Steward Peer
Network is a networking group for Land Steward
professionals in Southern California. We meet the third
Tuesday of each month from 2-4PM, at various locations
throughout Southern California. Certain exceptions may
occur, depending on site access and security
restrictions.
It looks like we'll be having a very full and diverse
meeting year! If you have any questions, please post to
the
Land Stewards Forum. Information for each field
meeting can be found on the
forum, with more information to come with each
monthly announcement. |

Tuesday, April 21, the Land
Steward Peer Network met at Limestone-Whiting Ranch
Wilderness Park. |
Present:
Senior Park Ranger Vicky Malton ; Amy Litton, City of
Irvine Open Space Preserve; Erica Beggan, Back to
Natives Restoration; Reginald Durant, Back to Natives
Restoration (all present please add your notes in
response to this post, thank you)
We met at the Viaggio water tank and carpooled up to the
location of the cactus transplants performed by
EarthWorks Restoration inc.
The heat was intense as we scouted the ridge along which
several new patches of Prickly Pear, (Platy) Opuntia
littoralis and Coast Cholla, (Cylindr) Opuntia prolifera
had been planted after being removed from a water
district project in Upper Chiquita/O’Neill Park. The
ridge had been identified by Donna Eto, Senior Biologist
from EarthWorks Restoration, Inc, as highly degraded and
in need of the transplanted cactus. The non natives
present were removed and the cactus installed, with many
over 3.5 feet in height and twice that in spread.
Several were large enough that double tree stakes had to
be used to be sure they did not topple prior to their
roots taking secure hold in the new location.
All cacti were showing signs of new buds and some with
flowers. This initial sign of success bodes well for a
substantial increase in potential Cactus Wren habitat in
Limestone-Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park. Photo points
have been assigned, with a commitment of 2 years of
monitoring for the location. A final report had not been
completed at the time of the meeting, so the notes from
the report could not be posted here at this time.
Remember to invite colleagues in the restoration and
land management fields, as communication and sharing of
experiences of restoration, land management and land
stewardship is crucial to continue our continued
successes in our respective missions! |
