Leaders Love Us

"I thought the presentation of information fantastic and was impressed and appreciative of how closely it all linked in with our recycling and conservation themes for this scouting year.  I will gladly spread my recommendation to other leaders about the Back to Natives program." - Junior Girl Scout Leader

Programs
Junior "Gardener" Badge Request Information
Junior GardeningBased on the “Gardener” Skill Building Badge from the Junior “Get Moving” Journey!  Scouts visit the Back to Natives Nursery at Santiago Park, then walk to the Nature Center to observe the established native plant garden there.  In our greenhouse the girls learn the difference between an annual and a perennial, and discover how to grow plants using seeds, bulbs and roots. They begin an experiment growing seeds using different amounts of soil, water and sunlight.  Scouts try their hand at designing their own garden, and help us grow the Back to Natives Community Education Garden.  The program is 2 hours and costs $7.50/scout.

Volunteer!

Back to Natives needs volunteers to assist with habitat restoration projects (removing non-native plants, and planting native plants). If you are interested in learning about these volunteer community service opportunities, send us an email or explore our volunteer page.

Cadette "Trees" Badge Request Information

Based on the “Trees” Legacy Badge from the Cadette “Breathe” Journey!  On a hike through the Santiago Park Nature Reserve, Scouts get to know at least five trees native to Orange County, and learn which have edible nuts and fruit.  They will find out how trees help the environment and people.  Scouts learn the parts of a tree - from the xylem to the phloem. They choose between three creative projects (leaf rubbing/sketching journal, poet-tree, or “interview a tree”).  They take a break in the Santiago Park Nature Center’s beautiful outdoor amphitheater to debate logging, then return to the BTN Nursery at Santiago Park to take a closer look at just how trees grow, and plant a tree to take home (from seed or cutting). Optional:  Scouts may tend trees in the Reserve (by removing non-native plants around them, or watering recently planted trees).  This would add an hour to the program. The program is 2 hours and costs $7.50/scout.

"What a wonderful day with the trees... The girls go to 6th grade Science Camp next week full of their new tree knowledge!"

- Cadette Girl Scout Leader
